Not Immune to Systemic Harm

Our Founder's Commencement Address at Sonoma State University's School of Social Sciences Graduation

As a little girl in Mexico City, never in my wildest dreams could I have predicted this journey, that I would spend most of my life living in the United States, speaking a different language, leading a successful career, and [finally] graduating college. AND I did just that this past May, when after seventeen years of persevering in the face of adversity, trauma, and systemic harm, I was able to walk across the stage as a college graduate!

This journey was definitely not easy, but it was my community and loved ones who motivated me every single day of these past seventeen years. The work we do here at Equity First is not simply theoretical or an exercise in intellectualism; it is very much a combination of experiential wisdom, heart, knowledge and wild dreams calling for collective liberation.

Whoever you are who has been called to this space, I hope my words bring you hope and serve as a respite so that you too may continue on this journey of bringing healing to communities through systemic and cultural change.

In community,

Ana Lugo, Founder and Principal
